synopsis
In 1974 an meningitis epidemic hits Brazil and Sirso is one of the disease victims. He loses his hearing at 4 years old and grows at suburb of Cascavel, Paraná, Brazil’s south. The black and poor boy takes more than 10 years to adjust himself to the deafness. The berimbau stops the silence: Sirso feels the sound vibration, join the Capoeira Roda, and the life earned a new sense. Learned how to make and play the musical instruments, developed the speech training with the Capoeira musics and become a Master. He dedicated to study and graduated in Physical Education college, but be a teacher still is a dream to come true. The life’s fight is for space and social inclusion, and for the deaf’s rights.

The inclusion of people with disabilities in social spaces is a collective challenge. Sirso’s history takes Capoeira to a inclusive place, but also a place where people can made their own identity and a powerful therapeutic treatment. As well as a great relevance to the brazilian culture. In 2008 the Capoeira’s Roda and the Master job was register as cultural heritage immaterial of Brazil, by IPHAN – Institute of Heritage historically and artistic nacional. In 2014 the UNESCO – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – signed the Capoeira’s Roda as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Capoeira is in all brazilian territory and in 150 other countrys.
The movie invite the spectator to ask himself about the educational process faced by the people with disabilities, and think about how persistent Mestre Sirso can be in the search for inclusive education, his fight for the space in Capoeira, in school class, in labour market, and in society.
Mestre Sirso became a speaker, graduated in a Physical Education college, e specialized in the same area. His arrived in a college represents the generation of black ideal who go to college and there they see a way to cultural and social mobility. The Sirso’s dream is work with education, as a Capoeira teacher, yet he still working as general service in a NGO – non-governmental organisations. The achievement of this documentary will enable that Mestre Sirso’s legacy can be seen beyond the city of Cascavel.
